An Epic Journey Begins

In Search of Small-Town America: Introduction marks the opening chapter of an ambitious and deeply human project – an extended road trip that set out to explore everyday life in small towns across all 50 U.S. states. Known as the “50-50 Project,” this work blends travel narrative, cultural observation and evocative photography to document places most guidebooks overlook.

What the Small Town America Project Is

The 'Small-Town America' series is a long-term documentation of a 350 day journey, covering over 32,000 road miles, passing through around 1,500 small towns across the United States. It offers an honest, personal look at life beyond the bright city lights – through the eyes of an author who lives the journey rather than simply reports it.

The Introductory Volume serves as both a launching point and a standalone experience. It not only introduces readers to the philosophy behind the project but also begins the narrative in earnest, with first-hand experiences in New Mexico and Arizona.

Behind the “50-50 Project”

The Concept of Travelling all Fifty States

At its core, the project was designed to capture small-town America in all its wide variety – from isolated desert towns, to historic Main Streets. The author visited every state over the fifty week duration, creating a detailed portrait of American life, in the first decade of the 21st century.

Planning and Logistics for the Journey

The Introduction Volume explains the planning, preparation and logistics for the road-trip. The chosen method of transport, the route-map and the author’s expectations before hitting the open road.

What’s Inside the Introduction

Overview of Content and Chapters

Volume 1 begins with a broad introduction to the premise for the work with a little history, the current perception of 'Small-Town America', before moving into chapters focused on New Mexico and Arizona. And it can be downloaded without sign-up – for free.

Themes and Narrative Style

This volume sets the tone for the entire series, with themes like discovery, cultural reflection and the contrast between nostalgia and modern realities. The narrative mixes candid diary entries with immersive storytelling, that feels just like you're riding in the passenger seat.

Chapter 1 – New Mexico

Leaving Albuquerque

The first chapter takes readers out of Albuquerque, detailing the author’s earliest days on the road. It describes learning to live life on the move, navigating freeways and back-roads alike. Finding the unexpected in ordinary places.

Early Encounters on the Road

Along the way, readers are exposed to the quirky discoveries – from a giant school bus depot, to religious diversity expressed in small towns. These early experiences showcase the variety and unpredictability of small-town life.

Oddball Towns and Unexpected Experiences

Beacons of curiosity, like the uniquely named town of 'Truth or Consequences', illustrate the amusing and sometimes surreal side of road-trip travel.

Chapter 2 – Arizona

Historic Sites and Roadside Culture

Arizona’s chapter brings readers into old mining towns, historic 'Wild West' places and remnants of famous highways like 'Old Route 66'. It reflects on how history and modern life intersect in small communities.

Highs and Lows of Small Town Life

From historic reenactments at the 'O.K. Corral' to a lively Friday night out, the narrative captures both the ordinary and the slightly chaotic elements of small-town living – creating a rich and resonant narrative.

The Narrative Voice

Candid and Personal Travel Writing

The dialogue is direct, often written as candid reflections from the road. Unlike traditional travel books, the tone feels like a diary shared with a friend – full of personal insight, humour and a fair helping of self-deprecation.

Humour and Honest Reflection

Humorous observations about towns, fellow travellers encountered along the way, and the author’s own mishaps give the narrative a feeling of warmth and relatability.

Photography and Visual Storytelling

What the Pictures Capture

The photography plays a vital role in each chapter, with images depicting streets and storefronts – landscapes and townscapes, moments that words alone might not fully convey. The pictures create a rich visual tapestry, to accompany and complement the text.

How Imagery Enhances the Written Journey

Rather than being mere illustrations, the photographs enhance the storytelling by adding emotional and contextual depth – bringing each scene to life.

Why the Introduction Matters

Setting the Tone for the Entire Series

As the first volume in a 17 volume exploration, the Introduction lays the groundwork for what’s to come – establishing narrative style, thematic focus and the author’s mission.

Providing Context for the Journey Ahead

Beyond storytelling, it frames the broader purpose: to document how small towns across America exist, persevere and evolve – in these changing and challenging times.
